Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: There is anger across the country over the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata. After this incident, indefinite strike has been declared in many hospitals in states from West Bengal to Delhi.

Resident doctors of many hospitals in Delhi, including the Centre-run AIIMS, RML Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital, started an indefinite strike on Monday (August 12). According to the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), emergency services will remain operational as usual during the indefinite strike.

Which hospitals in Delhi are on strike?

Doctors from Delhi’s Maulana Azad Medical College, Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, Deendayal Upadhyay Hospital, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College and National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases also participated in the strike.

Four thousand resident doctors were on strike in UP on Monday (12 August). The effect of the doctors’ strike was also seen in hospitals of other cities including Lucknow’s SGPGI, Lohia Institute and KGMU. This strike is likely to continue further.

Resident doctors of Maharashtra have announced an indefinite strike from Tuesday (August 13). The central MARD (Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors) said in a statement, “All elective services will be closed in hospitals across Maharashtra from Tuesday. All emergency services will continue as usual.”

What are the demands of resident doctors?

FORDA general secretary Dr Sarvesh Pandey said, “We placed our demands before the health secretary, which include immediate removal of the principal of RG Kar Medical College, a CBI inquiry, trial in the case in a fast track court and formation of a committee to implement the Central Security Act.”
